Greg Monroe to Sign With Celtics

Greg Monroe plans to sign with the Boston Celtics under their Disabled Player Exception, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

New Orleans Pelicans head coach Alvin Gentry pushed hard to lure Monroe to his hometown, which would have been a nice fit given the injury to DeMarcus Cousins. Gentry guaranteed him a starting spot, but Monroe opted to join the Celtics instead.

“The Moose” will have to, once again, battle for playing time in Boston alongside Al Horford, Aron Baynes and Daniel Theis. Prior to his buyout, Monroe played very little with Phoenix, watching Tyson Chandler and Alex Len take the majority of minutes at center.

Monroe joins a much better team in Boston, but could very well see similar court time depending on how Brad Stevens wants to use him with their system.
