Bucks Lead

Who is Bonzie Colson?

The Milwaukee Bucks have reportedly signed ex-Notre Dame forward Bonzie Colson to an NBA two-way contract.

This comes following the release of Jaylen Morris, who previously occupied one of two two-way contracts for Milwaukee alongside Trevon Duval.

Who is Bonzie Colson?

College Career

Colson played four years of college hoops with Notre Dame, averaging 13.1 points, 7.2 rebounds, 1.2 blocks and 1.0 steals per game. In 2017, his junior year, Bonzie was selected as a third-team All-American and made first-team All-ACC. In his senior year, Bonzie was putting up career-highs in points, rebounds, steals and blocks. His career season, however, was riddled with injuries. He broke his left foot two times, one of which made him miss fifteen regular season games. The other made him miss Notre Dame’s last NIT tournament game.

Professional Career

Bonzie went undrafted in 2018, but was later signed by the Cleveland Cavaliers. Cleveland ended up waiving him, but was immediately signed by their G-League affiliate — the Canton Charge — where he has played since. Bonzie is averaging 15.5 points (49% FG, 39% 3Pt), 7.8 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game this season for the Charge.

Play Style & Fit

Colson is listed as a 6’6″, 225-pound power forward. While he is an undersized power forward when it comes to height, he can certainly play like a big. He can play the three and four, handle the ball well for his size, post-up strong, and has recently added a three-point shot to his arsenal. He also excels in the mid range, something that Bucks head coach Mike Budenholzer isn’t typically looking for, but it’s nice to know he has that skill set.

Since this is a two-way contract, and the Bucks have a good amount of people at his position like Giannis Antetokounmpo, Ersan Ilyasova, DJ Wilson, and Christian Wood, it is very unlikely that he will see any playing time with Milwaukee. He will, however, get substantial run in the G-League with the Wisconsin Herd.

Bonzie’s ability to score from anywhere on the floor and his ability to rebound for someone of his size can be valuable for the Bucks. Milwaukee thrives when they have players who can do it all. And from what we’ve seen in college and the G-League, Bonzie Colson can.
