Sixers Lead

Where Do The Sixers Go From Here?

on

As the Sixers’ season came to devastating end in Game 7 against the Raptors, they have a lot of adjusting to do this offseason.  It was announced earlier this month that head coach Brett Brown would remain the head coach for the 76ers for the 2019-2020 season.  That is a great first step considering the team has a lot of free agents this summer.

The Process was in the making, and had the potential to make the Eastern Conference Finals, but a quadruple “doink” buzzer beater by Kawhi Leonard sent the Sixers home.  Philly, on paper, had arguably the best starting lineup in the NBA, but still couldn’t make it out the 2nd round for the 2nd year in a row.  This next season can either be a make or break year for the 76ers.

Starters

Technically speaking, Joel Embiid is the only for sure player returning that is on the starting five.  Reasons for this is because there have been rumors circulating that Ben Simmons could be shipped to the Lakers to play with LeBron James or another destination. We don’t know how true the reports are, but anything is possible in this business.  JJ Redick is a for-sure sharpshooter, hitting 44% from the field this season– but he’s just not a great defender.  Redick has said in the past that we wants to finish his career with the Sixers.  Jimmy Butler and Tobias Harris are both eligible for max contracts this offseason and things are starting to heat up. Jimmy has shown to be a great asset to the Sixers and he is a born leader on the court.

Tobias provides a spark to the offense by opening the floor, can catch and shoot the ball from 3-pointer well as his mid-range jumper.  Ben Simmons has the potential to be a league MVP if he discovers his jump shot in the off-season.  Simmons averaged 17/9/8 without a jumper– that’s pretty impressive.  Joel Embiid is the face of the Sixers organization and he looks to take his game to the next level.  The biggest thing Embiid needs to focus on is his health.  Throughout his five-year career, he has missed more games than played.  Embiid has made 2nd Team All-NBA and 2nd Team All-Defense.

Bench

The Sixers’ bench has been rocky all season long. Just some key players that are on the Sixers bench:

Landry Shamet was a key bench player for the Sixers, but was sent to LA in order to acquire Tobias Harris from the Clippers. Greg Monroe is as good as gone, Mike Scott is embraced by the Philly fans and has said that Philly has the best fans. T.J. McConnell is another key to “The Process” and has a ton of heart, but he just isn’t reliable down the stretch.

After averaging 7.5 PPG in the playoffs off the bench, James Ennis has declined his $1.8M players option and will become a free agent. Boban Marjanovic is a solid backup to Joel Embiid and could return to the team, and Zhaire Smith has the chance to takeover the JJ Redick role.  Jonah Bolden showed flashes of being a good role player but fell off during the playoffs.

Overview

Elton Brand and the Sixers organization have their hands full and a busy offseason to make some moves. If they can’t re-sign Jimmy Butler or Tobias Harris this off-season, then who should they pursue in free agency? The NBA Draft is less than a month away and they have the 14th overall selection. Could the Sixers possibly find trade value for the 14th pick or get a steal in the draft? All of Philadelphia is eager to see what the team has planned, and what is in store for the season to come.
