Can Tacko Eventually Make Boston’s 15-Man Roster?

on

Standing 17 inches taller than Celtics’ All Star, Kemba Walker, Tacko Fall is just on the fringe for this year’s roster. After going undrafted this past June, the center has been fighting every day to make the Boston roster. Now on a two-way contract, Tacko is expected to spend the year developing with the Maine Red Claws in the G-League, but can spend up to 45 days in the NBA before Boston has to either convert his two-way contract to an NBA deal or release him. Despite shooting just 43 percent from the free throw line in college and having less playing experience than most of his competitors, there is a very real case for Tacko Fall to make the Celtics’ 15-man roster this year.

Potential

Tacko would be in incredibly rare company should he play in the NBA. Behind just Gheorghe Muresan, Manute Bol, Shawn Bradley, and Yao Ming, Tacko Fall would be the 5th tallest player ever to play in the NBA at 7’5″. Additionally, Tacko has only been playing organized basketball for about 5 years now. With a growing skill-set and NBA coaching, Tacko could learn to become a very gifted big man in the ranks of the aforementioned Bradley or Ming.

Physicality

With his size and desire to get improve, Tacko could provide a major spark for the Celtics off the bench right away. We saw a bit of this in the C’s first preseason game on Sunday.

And we saw a lot of this in March Madness, even against top pick Zion Williamson.

With a man like Tacko down low, sometimes you just need a guard to get him the ball. His hands are soft enough to take an entry pass without slipping, which is better than many can say. We’ve even seen him dominate other Celtic seven-footers with his sheer size.

After shooting about 74 percent from the field in college, Tacko could end up being a Shawn Bradley-type in the NBA. You can expect to see a lot of dunks, a lot of blocks, and not much else. In a league dominated by shooters, Tacko could be a true center for Boston. Every team needs someone who can provide a few minutes of defense and rebound each night.

There’s also one more role that Tacko could fill for the Celtics. Imagine a scenario where the Celtics are up one with four seconds left. The opposing team is inbounding out of a timeout in the half-court. A common strategy here is for long defender to guard the inbounder to make the pass difficult. Name someone better for that role than the tallest man in the NBA.

Marketability

Tacko should make the 15-man roster for basketball reasons alone. However, some organizations need a financial incentive to get them to sign a player. Tacko Fall is already a Boston fan-favorite. From taking swimming lessons, to playing guitar in the locker room, to having the first name of one of America’s most popular dishes, Tacko Fall was born to be a fan favorite. And from the bottom of my heart, I am so sorry to Tacko that his name and height are probably the centerpiece of 90% of his conversations.

Lastly, I’ll leave you with this clip of Celtics fans going berserk for him:
